Perhaps the best part about this brewpub is its location. It's right by the pier in Long Beach, with a great patio overlooking the beach, and a walkway busy with skaters, cyclists and walkers. It was a sunny afternoon when I visited and the atmosphere was a perfect way to spend my day off. The 5-pack sampler gave me a good idea of the brews, which surprisingly all had a fair amount of hoppiness but probably just lacked a little in body. I was particularly impressed by the IPA (the feature beer) and followed up the tasters with a pint. Not too bad overall, but the only reason I'd go back would probably be for the patio setting..

Beers Reviewed

IPA Type: IPA ABV: %
Cloudy, amber hue, light carbonation. Mild hop, spice, pepper aroma. Tingling, fizzy palate, light to medium bodied. Nice fruity apricot malt flavor, finishes fruity too, before hop citrus catches up in the aftertaste. Very good IPA.
Ratings: Appearance: 4/5 Aroma: 6/10 Palate: 3/5 Taste: 7/10 Overall: 14/20 Score: 3.4

Marathon Type: California Pale ABV: 4.5%
Light pale golden color, noticeable carbonation. Aroma doesn't show too much, a bit of malt and a bit of hop, but nothing really jumps out. Palate is light bodied for an ale, showing good carbonation. Pretty light in flavor, moderate bitterness in the finish, rounding out with a mellow dryness. A relatively light flavored ale, nothing more than a crisp refresher.
Ratings: Appearance: 2/5 Aroma: 5/10 Palate: 3/5 Taste: 6/10 Overall: 11/20 Score: 2.7

Top Sail Type: Amber Ale ABV: 5.5%
Reddish amber hue, showing the clarity of an amber lager. Aroma shows a mild nuttiness with faint malt and noticeable hops. A clean apple fruity malt drifts into a smooth slightly fizzy palate. Finishes out with a good level of bitterness and citrus in the aftertaste. A little too light in malts and body, but good hop properties.
Ratings: Appearance: 3/5 Aroma: 6/10 Palate: 2/5 Taste: 7/10 Overall: 12/20 Score: 3.0

Long Beach Crude Type: Porter ABV: 6.2%
Black color with red light refractions. Intriguing herbal aroma, almost clove like, with mild chocolate nuttiness. Palate relatively light bodied for style, could use a touch more weight. There's a nice roasted dryness and hop bitterness in the finish, while a mid-palate creamy sweetness provides good balance. Coffee hints are pretty vague, while the chocolate in the commercial description never really materializes. A decent porter but not much depth.
Ratings: Appearance: 3/5 Aroma: 8/10 Palate: 2/5 Taste: 6/10 Overall: 13/20 Score: 3.2

Strawberry Blonde Type: Fruit ABV: 4.5%
Pale golden color, striking clarity, good carbonation. Strawberry candy aroma, faint hits of hops and malt. Very light lager-like in the palate with a moderately restrained carbonation. Not much flavor noticeable, strawberry candy from start to finish, lingering into aftertaste. Mild bitter dryness in the finish. Nothing too exciting here, but probably would go well with younger palates.
Ratings: Appearance: 2/5 Aroma: 5/10 Palate: 2/5 Taste: 5/10 Overall: 10/20 Score: 2.4
