Anchor Liberty Ale |
Type: Pale/IPA |
ABV: 5.9% |
Original gassiness and well formed, enduring
spongey head spark confidence amid the lightly golden amber body. Aroma
shows fruity esters and bubble gum, accompanied by PNW citrus hops, while
deeper fruits arrive later hinting at apples or pears. It's lightly fizzy
on the palate with an essentially smooth mellow medium bodied
mouthfeel. The hop fruitiness is prevalent throughout, with light
bubble gum malts. It turns dry later in the palate with a tangy citric
finish, rounding into a well balanced blend of bittersweet citrus. The aftertaste
holds together well.
A nicely hopped and easily drinkable ale, reminding me very much of my
local AleSmith X. I wouldn't quite call this an IPA as many do, maybe an
Extra Pale Ale or a California Pale Ale. A wonderful brew whatever you
want to call it.

Porter |
Type: Porter |
ABV: 5.7% |
"Aesthetically pleasing”, thick and
full, very dark, black with something of a ruby red hue. The beige foam is
dense and requires very little encouragement in the pour, and is extremely
enduring. There’s an initial chocolate aroma that quickly escapes the
bottle, although after pouring I did find this character somewhat harder
to detect. It’s malty for sure, in fact I really didn’t get much hops,
there’s a slight nuttiness and even a mild vinuous fruitiness. The
special inviting character, however, has to be a strong port-like aroma. A
light carbonation greets the tip of the tongue, but overall it’s a very
smooth texture, nicely comforting and warming. It does border on the
lighter side for a porter, medium-bodied, which might make you drink this
a little quicker than the flavor and character demand. The port-like
character is confirmed right at the front of the palate. There’s a firm
maltiness, and a fruity estery bubble-gum middle. The traditional dry
coffee-like flavors entertain the latter half of the palate, while the
initial chocolate I got in the aroma also appears but very briefly,
requesting little attention. There’s a slightly sharp bitter dryness to
the finish, more espresso-like than the citrus that many west coast
brewers opt for, while it does round out with an impressive smokiness and
comforting alcohol warmth in what is a long lingering aftertaste. This is
a fantastic robust porter with a rich malty nose and palate. The port
flavor and aroma enhance the brew, while the dry finish strikes up a
perfect balance. Any porter drinker or anyone who is serious about their
beer should certainly give this wholly satisfying brew a go. |

Steam Beer |
Type: Steam (hybrid) |
ABV: 5% |
This beer certainly carries a complexity that
attracts a lot of interest. It transcends the style of both an ale and a
lager. It’s comparable to an amber ale in some ways but maybe even more
complex than that. As a lager it certainly carries a good full body as
well as a nice blend of flavors. Hoppy, malty, fruity, dry. A must try. |

Wheat Beer |
Type: Wheat |
ABV: % |
A wonderfully crisp, refreshing wheat ale that
draws upon many of the fine qualities of a pilsner, while adding a subtle
ale character. Wheat malt, subtle lemon and apple fruitiness as well as a
little honey precede a great crisp dry finish. It looks great too
with impressive carbonation, clear filtered body and solid white foam. A
quintessential summer brew. |
