For fans of microbrewing, there are few more interesting
breweries in the USA than Rogue. Ever inventive, the company brews a very
impressive range covering about 30 beers. Their stout, named Shakespeare, is
instantly recognized by beer lovers as one of the best of its breed.
The brewery, based in Newport, Oregon, was founded in 1988. Although the name
Rogue can be attributed to its role as non-conformist in the brewing industry,
it was actually taken from the name of the Oregon river. The company’s slogan
is, “Dedicated to the Rogue in all of us.” If you want to know more about
the campaign for the smaller guys in the brewing industry, check out Rogue’s

Rogue
Dead Guy Ale (Maierbock) |
Type: Maibock |
ABV: 6.6% |
A Maibock that's actually top fermented. Sugary
pretty much defines this beer, syrupy, toffeeish with slight tang in
aftertaste. Refreshing and characterful. Not a true bock, but a good
introduction and interesting style by itself. |

Rogue
Honey Cream Ale |
Type: Cream Ale |
ABV: 4.8% |
Pale golden, moderate carbonation and head
formation, distinctive haziness.
The nose suggests signs of pale and caramel malts (I wasn’t aware of
what malts were used at the time), while a honey sweet aroma is evident as
well as little lemon. The citric hops sit in the background, and it seemed
that every time I was detecting them the honey quickly suppressed them.
The palate is lightly carbonated and remarkably smooth. It’s somewhat
light to medium bodied, just thickening slightly in the finish. If the
nose had suggested something sweet, I was about to be corrected in the
flavor. There’s a lemon fruity tip that turns a little malty. The middle
is smooth and expectedly honey-like although this latter quality is much
briefer than I would have expected. There’s a detectable hop dryness
throughout the palate while it does turn very tangy and citric bitter in a
crisp finish. The middle honey sweetness does provide a slight balance
against the more bitter finish, but this is remarkably well hopped for the
style. Refreshing version, typically Rogue-ish. |

Saint Rogue Red |
Type: Amber Ale |
ABV: 5.2% |
A flagship beer. Great balance and great full
flavors for what is essentially a full bodied amber ale. Nice roasted
malt, toffee, caramel mix well with tangy hop finish with nothing being
too dominant. Great sociable drinker. |

Santa's Private Reserve |
Type: |
ABV: 6% |
A variation on Saint Rogue Red with more hops.
Very foamy, dark brown color, impressive head. Initially light on the
palate a little sweet, smooth, buttery silkiness. Finishes very hoppy and
citrussy. |

Rogue
Shakespeare Stout |
Type: Dry Stout |
ABV: % |
Very dark and impressively foamy. Burnt
coffee-like aroma. Hops dominate with sweet roasted barley and chocolate.
Aftertaste is dry, but mellows and should be savored. Further tasting
reveals nice creaminess. One of USA's best beers. |

Yellow Snow (2001) |
Type: Pale Ale |
ABV: 5.2% |
I was disappointed with this one. It's hoppy
enough to be an IPA but the malt just doesn't balance out. Also there's a
lingering alcohol/vodka-like aftertaste. The first few sips were fine but
I kind of lost interest before I'd finished it. I'll try it again in 2002. |
